Village ‘Spring Clean’ – Saturday 20th March

One aspect of past ‘Best Kept Village Competitions’ was that the community got together for a general tidy up at spring time. We feel that irrespective of whether we choose to enter the competition, a village ‘spring clean’ is fundamentally a sound idea. Consequently, we are inviting people who wish to be involved, to meet up outside the village hall at 9.30 am. on Saturday 20th March. Children are particularly welcome. Please come suitably ‘kitted out’ with gloves and black bin liners if you have them.

Best Kept Village Competition

Should we enter the competition this year?  If you live in the Parish, why not have your say by voting in the poll below, which closes on 12th March. We would also like to hear from anyone who would be interested in co-ordinating the village’s application, either this year or in the future, should we decide to enter. Please leave your comments here or contact the Clerk on 310146.

Should the village enter this year's 'Best Kept Village' competition?

Tip of the Week

If the snow is sticking to your metal shovel, dry off the shovel thoroughly, light a candle and drip and rub the warm wax onto the shovel. This prevents the snow from sticking! I learned this technique from the village roadman before salt and JCB’s were used (some time in the last century!). The village roadmen had to dig out drifts across the roads by hand.

Winter dullards….

Winter has been with us for over three weeks now. And during this time most local road users have either not ventured out. or, have diven in a way that the road conditions dictate…

One such local in large 4×4 over took me traveling down towards lode today.

The road was covered in snow and ice. I estimate the vehicle was traveling about 40 to 50 mph.

For God sake we do not all own such vehicles. And at the end of the day if a 4×4 hits ice it will perform in the same way as any vehicle so please slow down.

Also could the person who drove into my daughter’s snowman on sunday morning! And knocked it down.
I would love to meet, so you could explain your actions to my daughter… Thank you…

Website Bugs

Following the unplanned upgrade to WordPress ver. 2.9 a number of features have broken. This is partly due to plugins which aren’t yet 2.9 compliant and partly due to customisations which must be reapplied.

Please respond with any additional problems you encounter.

Known bugs:

1. Users online (bottom of home page) not working FIXED
2. Contact Us – – form broken FIXED
3. User registration – I think there was an image on the registration page… can anyone remember what it looked like?
4. when a user logs in after first registering they are thrown into the registration page rather than the home page. If they logon from the sidebar on the home page they stay on the home page.

Lode Mill Surveys

Hi everyone. You may recently have noticed some activity at Lode Mill by people in yellow jackets. This is because we have to undertake an archaeological survey for the Peak National Park as part of the planning application. In February we will also have a survey of the mill workings by The Midland Wind and Watermills Society. Once these are prepared I will send a copy of each report to the Parish Council to include in their archive, and by then I should be in a position to host the documents on www.lodemill.com as well, including a pictorial review of the mill interior.

New posts

Have you seen that the word “post” has been painted on the road in several places in the village? An arrow from the word points to a spot where it seems the post is to be erected – though in the case of the one opposite the village hall the spot is on the dry stone wall. I am intrigued to know what might appear to need support from all these posts. Any ideas?

THANK YOU

Alstonefield Parish Council would like to thank our Lengthmen for the great work undertaken throughout the year in maintaining our beautiful village.

Thank you also to all who assisted in replacing the posts around the village greens. Another job well done…
