Wooton AWAY – 23rd May 2010

BALLSY BAGSHAW THE WINNER IN LOSING DRAW

On a sweltering afternoon in the Cleaver Hills, the Gargoyles recovered to earn a losing draw thanks to a blistering innings by Phil Bagshaw. Wooton won the toss and batted first. Openers Fuller (50 not out) and Dean (31) took full advantage of a lightning fast outfield and put on 77 runs for the first wicket. Strong hitting by Plant (31) and Little (36) in the middle order helped give Wooton a formidable score of 202 for 8 from their 30 overs. All the bowlers got wickets, but Phil Bagshaw shaking off a painful leg infection to bowl left arm spin, was the most economical. Losing three wickets in the first two overs was not the best start, but instead of a complete collapse,  Richard Salt with 17 and Robert Flower with a priceless 31 not out, steadied the innings. Enter man of the match Phil Bagshaw to savage the Wooton attack with 47 runs off only 20 balls. Gargoyles pride had been restored. 142 for 6 wickets at the end of 30 overs. It could have been so much worse and how nice to see two batsmen return to form in such fine style.
