GARGOYLES NOT SMILING NOW

Alstonefield St. Peter’s Cricket Club travelled to Elton on Sunday and were soundly beaten by 7 wickets. Batting first, the Gargoyles struggled to impose themselves against a lively and accurate Elton attack. Five batsmen got into double figures, but it wasn’t until veteran Dave Singleton with 15, enjoyed a partnership with Richard Salt, who top scored with 24, that batting started to look like fun. 109 for 9 from the allotted 35 overs. The task was to keep the Elton batsmen down to 3 runs per over and for 11 overs, imaginative bowling selection by skipper John Salt and impressive accuracy had Elton at 35 for 3, with Phil Bagshaw’s hostile spell claiming all 3 wickets.  Then the blitz began. Rob Lightfoot who had been Elton’s leading wicket taker, gave a masterclass in destructive batting, with 55 runs in little over 7 overs and Elton passed the 109 with plenty of overs in hand. A tough test for the Gargoyles against a hardened league outfit.
