RAIKES’ PROGRESS TRIUMPHS OVER HOPERS

In the second of their three club days, Alstonefield St. Peter’s Cricket Club had all their available talent on display on Sunday in a match between the Raikes and the Hopers, with the Raikes stealing a narrow victory.  The Hopers batted first and Rob Flower with 15 and Neil Shotton with 18, got them off to a bright start, with an opening stand of 31. Newcomer Terry White and young Fin Allen both scored 13 and with Brian Ross marking his comeback with an elegant cameo at the end, the Hopers had accumulated 127 from their 25 overs. Phil Bagshaw was again the pick of the Raikes’ bowlers, with good accurate support from Mikey Allen. The Raikes were soon in trouble against the beguiling spin of Neil Shotton and zip of Fin Allen. At 27 for 3 Alan Hayes stepped out to make his highest score of 15 and Phil Bagshaw looked in good nick with a rapid 20. Andy Siddons made a welcome return to form with a steady 20 and Ian Mckay saw the Raikes home with an unbeaten 23. Victory by 1 wicket. Man of the match Simon Smith took 3 wickets and gave a hint to a promising playing career ahead. As a showcase for the club’s talent, the match was an unqualified success.
