Tip of the Week

If the snow is sticking to your metal shovel, dry off the shovel thoroughly, light a candle and drip and rub the warm wax onto the shovel. This prevents the snow from sticking! I learned this technique from the village roadman before salt and JCB’s were used (some time in the last century!). The village roadmen had to dig out drifts across the roads by hand.

Calling all Stitchers & Craft Enthusiasts

Would you like to spend a pleasant afternoon each week with like-minded people?  Would you like to learn such diverse skills as Crewelwork, Calligraphy or Transfer Dye printing?  (to name but a few!). Then come along and join Alstonefield Arts & Craft Group on Tuesday afternoons from 2.00 pm. to 4.30 pm. in the Village Hall. We welcome everyone from the Parish and immediate surrounding villages. For more information please contact Cathy on 310125 or Jani on 310366.

Working Party at Church

We want to black lead the iron grids which cover the heating system in Church and paint the front gates of church. It is not heavy work and we hope to be able to black lead the ironwork outside to reduce any mess made. If you can help, please come along on Wednesday and Friday evenings, 16th & 18th September, from 6.30 – 8.00 pm. Thanks.

Village Greens

You will notice that one village green now has new posts. At some time in the near future, the large village green outside The George will also have new posts and any volunteers would be most welcome (contact Dot Griffin on 310249). The chains which have been removed are in storage and the old posts will be chopped up and distributed amongst the volunteers.

Recycling

Following a discussion at the recent Parish Council regarding this matter, contact has been made with Environmental Services 0845 6053014. We are advised that in the first instance it is possible to swap any small brown bin (140 ltr) with a large bin (240 ltr). Secondly, it is possible to purchase a further large bin for a one off payment of £34.95. Brown paper sacks are also available at a cost of 50p each from the Council offices in Leek. All will be collected on the day allocated.

Recycling

A reminder to all that if we use the recycling containers on the playing field car park, this brings income to the village.  This year we received £312.83.  So whever possible, please use this facility.  Thank You.
