Headstone and Memorial Inscriptions

Alstonefield church and churchyard contain over 730 headstones and memorials and over a period of 2 years, the project to transcribe all the legible headstones and memorials in the churchyard was completed.

The oldest headstone is dated 3 April 1518, in memory of Anne Green. It is thought that this is one of the oldest, dated headstones in the country. The oldest known person buried here is Margaret Barclay, who died in 1731 aged 107!

We are grateful to the work that Rev D Tinsley (Vicar of the parish 1982 – 1996) completed in the early 1980s, which was a great start to our work. Unfortunately, in the intervening years a number of inscriptions have become illegible, so his earlier records have been particularly important to us.

All proceeds will go towards the ongoing upkeep of the church and churchyard.
